ABOUT THIS GROUND

Valles Caldera is a collapsed volcano in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, a bowl roughly fourteen miles across formed in an eruption over a million years ago, with forested lava domes rising out of open grass valleys. This composite is roll 417, frames 125–133, flown 14 June 1987 at 39,900 feet and 1:58,000 on nine-inch colour infrared film. On that film the structure declares itself: conifer forest in deep reds and maroons, flat meadow floors read pale, and the caldera rim and the roads drawn as outlines.
